Wed. 6:30pm Jan. 3rd - 31st.
You've probably heard that Pilates is the most perfect
cross-training for skiing. In fact, its so good that I devoted
an entire chapter of my book, Pilates for the Outdoor
Athlete (Fulcrum, March 2007) to helping skiers
improve their core strength and fitness. Following is an exert
from my book.
"Tapping into a strong core, you’ll improve your
balance, agility, and be more in control. Integrating core
strength into your edging, you’ll transfer a powerful line of
energy to your skis or snowboard. You’ll also reduce impact on
your back, hips, and knees. Practicing Pilates makes your
movements more energy efficient, minimizes wear and tear on
your joints, and increases your enjoyment."

| Tips for a Healthy Back this
Holiday |
 |
|
Take extra care of your back this season by packing a
Pilates mat when you travel. If you don't have a mat, a folded
blanket or towel will do the trick. Here's one Pilates
exercise to keep your back happy this holiday. (If you are
unfamiliar with the Mat work or have special needs, we
recommend you attend a class or schedule a private lesson
first.)
The Roll-Up :Begin lying on your back with your
knees slightly bent, your feet flexed against a wall and your
arms by your side. Pull your navel to your spine. INHALE, lift
your head and walk your hands up your legs peeling your spine
off the mat. Avoid using momentum to hoist yourself off the
mat. EXHALE, and curl forward reaching toward your feet,
looking down at your knees. Hollow out your stomach as if
there is something on your lap you want to lift up over.
INHALE and roll back down one vertebra at a time as if you
were making an imprint with your spine in sand. EXHALE to
complete.
To learn more about strengthening your back consider
joining us on Monday or Thursday at 9:15am for the reformer
class, Healthy Backs.
